The world of geocaching is a troubled one. Not for the hiker, out in the fresh air, but in the world of supporting data - after all, someone's got to keep track of where all the 'caches' are. Thus there's a war between various factions - Groundspeak is the largest, then Garmin's Opencaching, then a number of others, all listed here. Mobicaching, for Symbian, here supports the latter network, and I've put some comments and screenshots below.
From Mobicaching's description:
Here are few main features:
- handles data from:
- Opencaching.de
- Opencaching.nl
- Opencaching.pl
- Opencaching.org.uk
- Opencaching.us, and
- Opencaching.com
- allows to save geocaches with their logs and images in device's memory, so there is no need to keep network connection while hunting
- geocaches may be marked as landmarks in Nokia Maps
- you may update all geocaches you saved by two clicks
So no mention of the huge Groundspeak database, sadly. Here's Mobicaching in action:
The free version is a 7 day trial, but this will be fine for you to try out, see if there's anything near you, etc.; (right) the home screen...
Hanging off the options menu is a filter for the geocaching servers supported; (right) zooming into a cache location - there's no multi-touch, so you have to use the control icons plus panning as needed.
You can also change the map source from the default of OpenStreetMap, bringing in Nokia's online version of the HERE Maps, albeit needing a restart of the application.
Nokia's maps have a satellite view too, for most countries, making this a very visual way of tracking a cache down; tapping on a cache icon shows the detail on it in the database.
Browsing through the main Settings menu - there's a lot to turn on and off; viewing part of my local area for OpenCaching geocaches - not a massive amount to track down, except around the 'Hook' area, apparently....
Mobicaching isn't without its bugs. Trying to download cache information en masse results in the download stalling every time...; (right) the legend for geocache-related map information.
Whether of not you need the full Groundspeak-hosted database is very much your call and depends how keen you are on the hobby in the first place(!)
You can buy Mobicaching here in the Nokia Store, or download a free trial version.
